What is "Assisted Self Training"?

Assisted self training enables you to train your own Diabetic Alert Dog but without the stress of being completely on your own! We help keep you and your pup's progress on track as well as help you make decisions that are best for you and your dog. Not sure where to find the right dog? Whether to use shaping or luring to teach a new behavior? Or what your dog should know by 5 months old? This is where MD Dogs comes in! We walk you through every step of the process and answer every question you have.

Option 1: Start to Finish

In the Start to Finish program we provide you with a puppy and guide you through approximately 10 months of training where you are the puppy raiser for your own dog. During those months, MD Dogs provides lesson plans and check-ins regularly, as well as offer in person training sessions every other week.

After your dog has reached the prerequisites needed (estimated after 10 months), then the dog comes to MD Dogs for scent training and, if applicable, public access training for 2-4 months. At the end of this, your dog returns to you, you receive transition training to learn how to work with your dog's new skills, and you have a fully trained DAD for about 50% of the cost of a fully trained one.
Currently, this is only available for those within a 1 hour drive of Lexington KY as we will have in person training sessions! $11,800

Option 2: A La Carte

Only have a few things you'd like help with and want to mix and match? You can do that too! These options can all be done virtually, with the exception of scent training and public access training as your dog will live in the trainer's home.
Finding the right dog
Not sure how to find the right dog? We will get to know you and your lifestyle and then we will find you options for dogs that will be suited for Diabetic Alert Dog work and set you up for success.
