Matching a Diabetic Alert Dog to the home perfectly suited to them is the most critical part of the training process. Each dog is unique and each family is unique; they have to become a team in order to work together successfully. As a small organization, typically MD Dogs receives 100 applications for every 1 available dog - below is our process to help match each dog to the perfect applicant. Because of the low volume of dogs we produce, we encourage applicants to continue searching for other organizations even after they apply in case they find a better fit or another dog is available sooner.
The first step is an online course and application. After those have been completed, within a few weeks we will email with the status of your application and your next steps. If you might be a good fit, then you'll speak with one of our Board members who also has a Diabetic Alert Dog, to get a more in depth view of what having a DAD is like and if this is the right fit for you. At this point, if you still seem to be the right fit and you'd like to move forward, then we ask that you contact us when you have 60% of the funds available for the level of training you'd like. Once that has been reached, you will be added to the MD Dogs Waitlist and we will begin considering you for any dog that becomes available and might be a match for you. |
If you are added to MD Dogs Waitlist, anytime a dog is available you will automatically be considered before other applicants. We will reach out to find out if you are still interested if the dog in particular might be a match for you. At any point you may remove yourself from the waitlist by sending us an email.
The dogs we provide are very unique and not your typical "service dog" as we work with small, high drive dogs - we aren't the organization for everyone! On average, we receive 100 applications for every 1 dog available - which unfortunately means that 99% of our applicants are not accepted due to the limited availability and the unique types of dogs we train. But we are happy to help you find the right organization or potential next steps based on your application, so feel free to apply and we may still be able to help you!
