EvieMD Dogs Here's to Eve'n BGs
Evie is a beautiful blue roan Diabetic Alert Dog who loves her people and will melt your heart! She was born here at MD Dogs and is out of our trained Diabetic Alert Dog, Birdi, and her father is a nationally recognized AKC champion in the show ring. This means she has both brains and beauty :-)

About EvieEvie is a purebred English Cocker Spaniel who is half field bred and half show bred. If you are one of "her people" she adores cuddles and will flip over in your lap for belly rubs every time. She also gives the best photos, and often has a quintessential "cheese" face! Evie is sweet and soft, without being overly sensitive - she has no problem going on an adventure or hanging out while you watch a movie.
Evie is not going to be a full Diabetic Alert Dog as she would be better suited to be an in-home Diabetic Alert Dog. This is because she has developed some nervousness when strangers attempt to get her attention or pet her. She is perfectly capable of going into stores and being confident and well behaved, however if someone tries to call to her and crouches down to say "hi" she would prefer not to and will back away. If Evie is physically forced to interact, such as at the veterinarian or groomer, she is perfectly fine - while she doesn't enjoy it, she will sit still and does not escalate her avoidance behavior. But, if given the option she will avoid the interaction. Because the public often tries to pet working dogs and call to get their attention, Evie is not a fit for full service work. Evie is up to date on all vaccinations and is from fully health tested parents (OFA/PennHIP, OFA elbows, Patellas, and full DNA). Evie also has been cleared through DNA testing, a full bloodwork panel, and an ophthalmologist appointment. Evie is currently too young to be spayed, but she will go on a spay contract. |
Imprinting & Scent TrainingEvie was born and raised here at MD Dogs. Her mother is MD Dogs' Birdi, so she received Neonatal Scent Imprinting from quite literally the day she was born. From Day 1 we started classically conditioning her to the odor of low blood sugar - she would be separated from Birdi for a few minutes 2x/day while we sprayed low blood sugar odor on her. When reunited, the puppies' instinct was to seek Birdi out immediately, thus seeking out low blood sugar odor. This results in a stronger association than traditional training alone, because Evie's brain is quite literally wired to find low blood sugar odor.
Evie's alert behavior is a paw to her human, and she will be placed as an in-home Diabetic Alert Dog, alerting to low and high blood sugars at a minimum of 70% accuracy. |
What Makes Us Different? Before our dogs graduate, they must pass a variety of tests based on the level of training they need to achieve. Most of these tests will be recorded and provided to the handler as evidence to provide transparency of the dog's progress and proficiency prior to being placed in their home. At any point before placement, if the potential match is not pleased with the progress, the contract can be cancelled and funds will be returned. Below are Evie's tasks for graduation:
